CHAPTER FOUR

Friday 19th

Steph knew that she was going to kill Kai as soon as she could get her hands on her. Twenty-four hours since her friend had passed the final mission, and Kai hadn’t bothered to call her. The only reason she’d found out was because Kai’s first cousin, Johann, had called her to ask if she wanted to be picked up from the airport that morning. Not wanting him to miss the start of the ceremony, Steph had just told him to send a car to pick her up from the airport.

Currently, they were fifteen minutes away. She had to give the driver, Jarmo, credit for cutting the one hour and forty-minute journey down to an hour. But the ceremony was supposed to start in five minutes.

The pressure from the car accelerating brought Steph from her thoughts, and as she looked around for the cause, she realised that she was tapping her fingers against the door. Jerking her fingers away, she wrung her hands together and forced herself to sit back in the seat. The sudden beep from her mobile gave her something to concentrate on, and pulling it from her purse Steph glanced at the message. A bark of laughter escaped her as she pressed the phone to her forehead, before looking at the screen again. She would have to speak with her phone company. The text from Kai, saying that she had passed, was over a day late from when her friend would have sent it.

“I really will kill her.” Steph’s mutter drew an alarmed expression from the driver in the rear-view mirror. “It’s okay, Jarmo. I don’t mean literally. Just severely maim her for texting, rather than calling.”

The young man chuckled as he manoeuvred around a slower car. “I’ve heard that Her Royal Highness can be a little absent minded.”

“That is putting it kindly,” she retorted with a roll of her eyes. Out of the left-hand side of the car, she could see a military helicopter hovering above Utti base. It signalled the start of the ceremony.

“Almost there, Ma’am.”

Tossing her mobile back into her purse, Steph clutched the bag against her lap and took a deep breath. Next week she had made an appointment to see King Magnus to try and persuade him to reconsider his position about letting Kai deploy. Steph fully expected him to reschedule, especially when he figured out what she wanted to talk to him about. Thankfully Kai was still required to continue training with the Fifth Platoon EOD until they flew to Iraq. So if a miracle happened, and Steph could convince the King to change his mind, Kai wouldn’t be unprepared.

The royal flags flying from the bonnet had them waved through the entrance gate, Jarmo driving down to the parade ground. They had barely pulled to a stop when Steph threw the door open and hurried over to the seats where she could see Johann and his little sister Riika. As she slipped into a spare seat next to Riika, Steph was heartened to see a few of Kai’s school friends had made the journey as well.
